Download: Keri Hilson feat. Kanye West - Pretty Girl Rock (Remix)

Keri Hilson has struggled to find her niche in the dog-eat-dog world of R&B/Pop that is currently dominated by the likes of Lady Gaga and Rihanna.  That doesn't mean she's not trying to be down.  This remix of the already popping 'Pretty Girl Rock' bursts out of the speakers once the 'Umbrella' drums drop at about 0:38 seconds in.  And Kanye drops by too, shouting out to the girls in Stockholm.

Review: Robyn -Call UR Girlfriend (album track)

by d.j.bobz purefunk.com.au

Robyn has been one of the shining lights of the pop landscape in the last decade, and her most winning moments comes when she successfully marries a great pop/dance beat with raw, emotional lyrics.   She's used terse violin stabs to up the ex-boyfriend drama on Be Mine, applied the propulsive ebullience of house music to a sincere tale of a failed relationship in With Every Heartbeat and gave the scum and lowlife of the world an uptempo lullaby with Dream on.

On her latest release, simply titled Body Talk (even though it is the third in a series that began), she gives us another instant classic 'Call ur Girlfriend'.  On the backbone of a stomping dance-floor filling bassline, Robyn is seen to be addressing a potential new beau and outlining his next move "Call your girlfriend... it's time you had the talk".  She continues on with the orders, listing rote break-up phrases one after the other "Say it's not her fault... Tell her you never meant to hurt no-one".  But with Robyn's beautifully aching delivery it's hard to tell whether she is sympathezing with the girl she's advising this guy to dump, or just coldly telling him what do out of sheer lust (or love?).

Great songs in this day and age need to move not only our feet and touch our hearts, they need to make us think too, even if only a little.  Robyn does a little of all of those things and makes something memorable and touching out of it, even if we're not sure who's side we're on at the end of it.

Review: Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

by Bob Burt purefunk.com.au

Call it Revenge of the Douchebag.  Super producer Kanye West has always been known for two things - ground-breaking hip-hop and his rampant ego.  They've become increasingly more significant over the last 10 years, now culminating in a near-perfect album that carefully indulges both without boiling over into a soiled mess.

It so easily could have.  Every song here seems as though it's been stuffed to the gills with idea's. There's more guests than you could point an MPC-60 at and the samples get more far out and obscure at the disc goes on.  The usual suspects appear, like Rihanna and Jay-Z, but it's his new pals, like Nicki Minaj, Pusha T and Rick Ross who show they are more than up to the challenge of overpowering the beats, and not vice versa.

Minaj kicks off the record with an odd british accent, flanked by a heavenly serenade of angelic Rihanna's. West drops in over a club-ready bounce, announcing his return whilst briefly acknowledging his Taylor Swift driven downfall.  'Gorgeous' is up next, with a re-energized Kanye rapping through a filter and comparing himself to Muhammed Ali and Malcolm X.  You believe it.

'All of the lights' is the obvious next single, with a who-who's of music contributing, triumphant cavalcades of horns and the craziest drums ever committed to tape.  It shouldn't work, but like everything else here, it does, because West balances the contributions and uses them when needed.  No need to give Elton John a whole verse, he works great in two bars.  The previously released 'Monster' is a straight-up well, monster of a track, with a career-making verse from Nicki Minaj, while 'So Appalled' finds Jay-Z, Pusha T and newcomer Cyhi Da Prince verbally slicing and dicing over a crazy hard Hip-Hop track.

'Runaway' is in there too, pushed out to seven minutes by a rambling, heavily filtered Kanye fade-out that accounts for half the song.  As good as Runaway is, it's only a warm-up for 'Blame Game', the Aphex Twin sampling collage that is targeted at West's former lover Amber Rose.  It too rides up over seven minutes, and every second is vital.  The vitriolic verses where West again filters his voice, this time making it seems like he's warring within himself, John Legend providing the raspy relief and then a well-worth-the-wait skit featuring a well-known comedian that fleshes out a conversation that may or may not have happened.  It's gripping.

Just for good measure, the Justin Vernon assisted dance blast of 'Lost in the World' finishes off the album, with veteran avant garde vocalist Gil Scott Heron providing a surprising, yet fitting final coda.  West has crafted a vivid, sprawling, lavish album, one that feels complete and yet never settled.  It's a fitting portrait of a douchebag, a douchebag that knows exactly how to turn tragedy into the ultimate triumph.

Kanye has had a rough week what with his ball-busting 'Today' interview where he got in a tizzy when they played the Taylor Swift incident over the top of his interview.  However, it didn't get him ticked off enough to stop GOOD Friday from kicking on.  Talib Kweli and Conequence guest with Q-Tip on the beat.

Video: Chromeo - Hot Mess

The funk Canadian 80's retro funk-synth progenitors have dropped their new video clip on us for 'Hot mess', and it's a hilarious throwback to the dodgy buddy cop movies of the 80's.  The only difference, all their fellow cops are hot women.  I would pay to see that movie.

Their new album 'Business Casual' is out now.

Video: Rihanna feat. Drake - What's my name

Last week we gave you the single, with Drizzy and Ri-Ri getting all lovey-dovey over the pulsing Stargate produced beats, and now here's the clip, which is as much of a lovefest as the track suggests.  Lots of beautiful, young people wandering around New York City, interspersed with cutaway clips of Drake and Rihanna looking at each other lovingly.   Check it out

Video: 8 year old B-boy (Lil Demon) does 30 Air Flares

I've seen some amazing kids strutting their stuff before, most notably the 3yr old breaker from Korea and the dancing baby from Brazil, but this 8 year old does 30 Air Flares!  Do you know how hard it is to do an Air Flare?  It's freakin' hard, and this kid does 30.  I doff's my hat to you, lil demon.

The 30 flares come near the end of the short clip.

Video: Cee-Lo - Bright Lights, Bigger CIty

We've all heard Cee-Lo's other song by now, and if you haven't, I'm sorry we cannot be friends anymore.  His new track pulses along with the same relentless groove as his other ubiquitous hit with Gnarls Barkley 'Crazy', although the bassline is sure remind most people of 'Billie Jean'.

Either way, it's a cracker of a tune, with a good-looking video clip to boot.

Stream: Darkstar - Fact Mix 200

by Bob Burt purefunk.com.au

It's an example of the internet at it's most efficient.  A genre of music like Dubstep can be created, evolve and cultivate it's own superstars within a few short years.  And when I speak of legends of the game, UK group Darkstar are sitting on top of the heap.  Never mind that there are many young upstarts breaking down their already signature sounds and creating their own masterpieces (Burial, James Blake), and hybrid genre's are sprouting from it's branches,  Darkstar continue to evolve along with the genre and turn out extraordinary music.

This month saw them release their first full album 'North' and to celebrate, they dropped this atmospheric (and funky) mix on Factmag.  Click on the Amazon link below to hear some of Darkstar's awesome new album.

Video: Kanye gives impromptu performance on Delta Airlines Flight

by Bob Burt purefunk.com.au
Pimpin' ain't easy, so they say, but Kanye makes it look easy.  Whether he's spruiking his new tracks at Twitter HQ or classing up SNL, you can't seem to escape Yeezy and his never-ending self-promotion.  This must have been entertaining though, as passengers on the New York to Minneapolis route were treated to a little 'Good Life' and  'Gold-digger'.  The video captures the end of the second track.  Yeezy's new album is out in a couple weeks.

I'm not the biggest Shakira fan, but for pure pop pleasure you could do a lot worse than picking up her latest album.  She was at the EMA's this weekend and performed two songs for an ecstatic crowd.

Stream: Kanye West -feat Rihanna, Elton John, Fergie, John Legend, The-Dream, Ryan Leslie, Tony Williams, Charlie Wilson, Elly Jackson (La Roux), Alicia Keys and KiD CuDi - All of the lights

Here it is, this is the one you've been waiting for - The all-star line-up guesting on 'All of the Lights', the next single off My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, is amazing, but then again so is the song.  I'll let the song do the rest of the boasting, enjoy!

Video: Pink - Raise your Glass

We haven't seen Pink for a while (besides when she was here for six months doing shows), and it's because she's been readying her Greatest Hits album.  One of the several new songs off that album is 'Raise your Glass', which toasts the underdogs out there (and not the douchebags).  Crazy video, but you wouldn't expect anything less from Pink

ReelDance on Screen Festival - Adelaide Nov. 4th

Reeldance is a festival celebrating dance on film, and it's coming to Adelaide from November 4th, after doing laps around the country.  It's a pretty diverse list of cinematic treats that have to show, including a back-to-back showcase of Madonna's Truth or Dare with Paris is Burning, a doco about the history of Vogue culture.   Support Dance and and Dance in Film by heading along, check Reeldance.org for details
